Eyal Nir discusses the importance of building a habit-forming product, and how to do it. He talks about using sensory triggers in conjunction with an action to create the association between the two. A simple example of this is brushing your teeth after you eat a meal.
These types of habits are what get people hooked on your product or service, and they will come back again and again because they don’t have to think about it, it’s automatic.
Chapter 3 – A Sense of Ownership
In Chapter 3, Nir recommends that the best way to get people hooked is to give them a sense of ownership. He recommends small steps for the user so that they feel like they are making progress and can see what their lives will be like when they have completed their goal.
For example, if your goal is to save $1,000, you would create an account and put in $5 each week until you reach your goal. It might take a year or more, but it feels good to know you’re working towards something and not just sitting around wasting time. And it feels even better once you’ve reached your goal!
Chapter 4 – Community And Belonging

The key to developing a habit is to remove all the barriers between taking an action and receiving the desired reward. In this chapter, Nir offers some techniques for doing just that. For example, he recommends removing all distractions from the environment, so you can focus on your goal.
This includes turning off notifications and alerts that may cause you to be lured away from your task at hand.
