The hard thing about hard things Book by Ben Horowitz

The hard thing about hard things Book by Ben Horowitz

  • The first chapter of The hard Things about hard things Book by Ben Horowitz is all about how to make the decision to start a business. Ben Horowitz talks about how he made the decision to start his own company, and how it was one of the hardest things he ever had to do. He also talks about how he knew that starting a company was the right thing for him, even though it was going to be hard.

  • The second chapter is all about hiring the right people. When you’re an entrepreneur, you have to know everything about your company. That means that you need to hire people who are not only talented, but will fit in with your culture as well. You need employees who are motivated by the same goals as you, who can take initiative when needed, and who can take responsibility for their work.

  • To find these types of people, you need to do some research. You should ask yourself if they’ve done anything noteworthy at their previous jobs, and what they want out of this job.

  • The third chapter is all about keeping your team motivated. To do that, you need to treat your employees well. You can’t ignore their desires and needs, and you have to be open with them about how things are going. This goes back to building a culture of trust because when people feel like they’re being ignored or lied to, they get upset and start thinking about other jobs they might want. Also, they won’t feel motivated to work hard if they don’t feel appreciated for their efforts.

  • The fourth chapter is all about hiring. Here, Ben talks about how to spot the talent that can grow with your company and what you can do to attract those people. He talks about all the things you need to think about when hiring employees, like setting salaries, which is important because money motivates employees but makes them easy targets for competitors.

  • The fifth chapter is all about managing your team. This chapter focuses on how to manage your employees so that they’re operating at their best, and on how to recognize when something isn’t working out. You need to be transparent in both of these areas so that your team knows what they’re doing right, and they know where they need to improve.

  • The sixth chapter is all about delegating, which is important because you can’t do everything yourself. In fact, if you try to do everything yourself, you’ll fail. This chapter talks about how to delegate responsibility for things so that everyone knows what they’re doing, and it also gives advice on how to deal with problems that crop up when employees are responsible for something.

  • The seventh chapter is all about knowing when to quit. As an entrepreneur, you’re going to get sometimes stuck, and that’s okay because it happens to everyone. However, when you get stuck in a situation where there doesn’t seem to be any way out, you need to cut your losses. This chapter talks about how to know when it’s time to walk away from a project or company that just isn’t working out so that you can start something new.

  • The eighth chapter is all about how to handle failure. Everyone fails, but not everyone knows how to handle it when things go wrong. Ben doesn’t give you a list of tips for when things go wrong because there isn’t just one way to deal with failure. Instead, he offers broad advice on how to build and sustain confidence in yourself, as well as in your company and employees.

  • The ninth chapter is all about collaboration. You need to work with other people in order to build your company, but you also need to know how not to get crushed by them. In some cases, partnering with someone else can help your company grow faster than you could ever do on your own. However, it’s easy for one person or a group of people to take control of a project and ruin things for everyone involved.

Advice about how to ru… Advice about how to run a successful business from a venture capitalist. Kind of interesting just to get his worldview, which includes a fair amount of advice about transitioning from small to big, and occasionally about firing the people who worked well for a smaller firm and not so well for a bigger firm. He’s a big proponent of committing to a strategy, even if it means a complete reorientation and getting rid of people who did a lot for the old version of the firm.

I thought there would … I thought there would be more stories, and less bland management advice. Since I’m not a tech startup CEO, I’m not really in the target audience. Still, the introduction and the last third of the book were interesting.

The first 10% or so of The Hard Thing About Hard Things is Ben Horowitz’s abridged autobiography. It’s a humanizing and necessary setup for the pragmatic advice which follows. If you’re hoping for more of the personal narrative angle throughout the rest of the book, i.e. the life of a CEO of a young company and having to constantly address challenges and make difficult choices, there’s some of that but you’ll likely be bored a third of the way in. However, if you’re eager to get into the thick of the actual ‘hard stuff,’ I promise you will find plenty of that and more.

The Hard Thing about Hard Things provides insight into the mindset required to be a founding CEO of a start up. It’s a scary place to be knowing your every action will impact the future of the company and all the people who work for you! Ben Horowitz starts the book off with an abbreviated biography of his experiences as a founding CEO during the Dot Com era before jumping in to practical advice those looking to set themselves on a similar path. I found the book to be an interesting read. While I have no desire to be an entrepreneur or CEO, I’m always curious why those at the top make some of the decisions they do, especially when they seem to make no sense at all, and this provided a small peek into that process. Even working at a large corporation that’s fairly stable I can see where some of Horowitz’s advice is still highly relevant, such as hiring for strength rather than lack of weakness, the importance of training your staff and how to minimize company politics. If you aspire to be a CEO, are interested in entrepreneurship or starting your own business, currently work at a start up or enjoy peeking behind the curtain at how some businesses operate, you’ll likely gain a lot from reading this book. For everyone else, your mileage will vary.

One of the Best Books for Entrepreneurship. As entrepreneurs there’s often an expectation that things get easier the second-time or as the business scales. The Hard Thing About Hard Things takes a pragmatic approach to providing practical lesson in how the lessons you learn through different phases of your business don’t necessarily get any easier. It’s a bit comforting to know you are not alone.
